What is kraamzorg?
Congratulations on your pregnancy! In the Netherlands, new families get postnatal care at home, called kraamzorg. A maternity nurse helps you during the first days after birth.
What does the maternity nurse do?
The maternity nurse (kraamverzorgster) checks on the health of mother and baby every day. She shows you how to care for your baby, helps with (breast)feeding and answers your questions. She also helps with light household tasks, so you can rest. She involves both parents in everything and also keeps an eye on how the partner is doing. Every family is different, and she adapts her care to yours. She works closely with your midwife (verloskundige) and contacts her if something needs attention.
How many hours of care will I get?
That depends on your situation. We discuss it during the intake, together with your wishes and circumstances. Usually you get 49 hours of care spread over 8 days. It can be less, with a minimum of 24 hours, or more, up to 80 hours. For example with twins, or if your recovery needs more time.
What does it cost?
Most of the care is covered by your basic health insurance. You pay a statutory personal contribution per hour (€ 5.70 per hour in 2026). Some supplementary insurance plans cover this, depending on the policy you chose. Please check your policy or ask your insurance company.
How do I register?
There is a national shortage of maternity nurses. Please register as soon as you know you are pregnant, preferably before week 16. We work together with your midwife to take care of your family.
After registering you receive two emails: a confirmation and an email to activate your online care file. The second one often ends up in your spam folder. No later than week 32 we will call you to plan the intake.
